Desciption and Historical Background

The site consists of two rock shelters:

  • The Abri inférieur, Abri classique or Abri 1, already excavated by Lartet and Christy in 1863
  • The Abri supérieur or Abri 2, positioned about 14 m below Abri 1 and excavated 1907 by Otto Hauser

In 1908 Otto Hauser discovered the Neanderthal skeleton Le Moustier 1.
The site was later excavated by Peyrony, who discovered 1914 the burial of the neonate Le Moustier 2.
