Additional Content

Maximum dimensions: 34.4mm (anterior-posterior direction) x 17.9mm (medio-laterally).
Most distinctive feature: expansive, elongated sphenoid sinus (25.5mm in the anterior-posterior dimension and 11.6mm in height) which is a characteristic feature of Neanderthals reflecting the relatively elongated anterior cranial base.
The identification of periostitis in the maxillary sinus fragment NN 34 (belonging to Neanderthal 1 found in 1856) argues that NN 19 may be associated with that individual (if NN 19 derives from that individual the presence of sinusitis in the sphenoid fragment could argue for a chronical paranasal sinusitis in Neanderthal 1).
